Artist’s Statement

Background

Starting at the age of 30, I have been full time artist. Before that I was studying law, University of Helsinki 1959-1962, languages, English Language Exam, University of Cambridge 1967, and the arts. While studying I also had jobs ranging from office employee to temporary ones within the fields of experimental and commercial photography, film, TV and fashion. 1980-2004 I have been teaching art classes at Swedish Adult Education Centre of Helsinki, and further had some commissions for illustration and portraits.

Artist Activities

Since 1970 my works have been shown in more than 170 exhibitions or festivals in 22 countries and they are part of public or private collections in 14 countries. Since 1988 my works have won eight international prizes or diplomas. Starting 1975 about 20 Finnish or Nordic grants, stipends or art contributions have been given to me. Further, important to my art have also been working periods at the following artists´ residences: Bergen 1994, New York 1996, Vilnius 1997 and Athens 1998.
My works also are included in the Documentary of Finnish Conceptual Art 1991-1994, Central Archives of Finnish National Gallery, Helsinki, Photograph Collections/Collection: Conceptual Art (Publication "Ephemeral Art", Ateneum 1999).

What I Would Like to Say

Because we all so to say have our own experience concerning the contemporary world and the history of art, other artists´ work must to some extent influence our own work. Aware of this, my aim is to focus on ideas, projects and techniques, which through my continuous work feel most proximate and familiar and thus also richest of innovative openings. Probably aptly it has been said about my art: "In her works, the artist expresses her own whimsical and witty apprehension of the world around her, whether of persons, seasons or aspects of urban culture" (MA & LT 2001).

Main Works and Projects

In my works, I have continuously featured people and human activities. I prefer working in long-term suites, and I think that among them especially the following ones - in chronological order - should be mentioned:

- The project DRAGSFJÄRD as its first phase includes paintings, more than 60 portraits of persons of the 1970´s in Dragsfjärd, a region in our southwest archipelago. As second phase of this project, starting 1995 I have been documenting my former painting models through photographs, recordings and written facts. On the original portraits combined with the new documentary materials, exhibitions, multi media works and/or monography have been planned. So far only one smaller display of materials from both phases together has been possible to arrange though, in Helsinki
2000.

- Also for the series WOMEN AT WORK, AGE, MULTIFACED PORTRAITS and many suites of SELF-PORTRAITS, using models has been necessary.
- PAINTINGS ON CANVAS AND FRAME and TEXT-WORKS ON GLASS AND FRAME started in 1985.

- My Project called SIMPLETON´S PUZZLE includes three dimensional,
almost monochrome, often mobile works with outlines of glued pieces of jigsaw puzzle.

- TRANSFORMED SELF-PORTRAITS are based on giant enlargements of my black and white passport photo of 1989, and works of the series have been shown in Nice 1991, in Helsinki 1993,1997 and 2007, in New
York, in Berlin and in Turku 1994, and in Mänttä 1995.

- TRANSSCAPES - with subsuites like Hommage à Meret Oppenheim, Hide Away and Tarzan - starting in the early 1990´s are realized in acrylic and/or fake fur on plastic and wood.

- AN-IM-AL and PIECE-PEACE-PEAS etc. are multi art suites pondering
the relation between "Art and Language", pictures and words. In this context, an art event called Tomato Soup in New York 1996, was documented through photographs and texts, which as part of an installation were shown at my solo exhibition, Helsinki 1997. An illustrated article about this project was also published in Coagula Art Journal 22/1996, USA.

- MAKING TWO FOCUSES MEET is the title of my current project based on photos and film-team materials kept on my files for more than 40 years.

- Works in the series CLOSE are in acrylic on form-cut relief-like plastic and wood. Motifs are details of rush-hour people in life-size as if seen at so close a distance that the picture really seems quite abstract or even nonfigurative.

- The project called HYDRANTS is composed of paintings, prints and audiovisual programmes based on hundreds of photographs which I starting 1989 have taken in various cities.

- For my multi art project called IMAGinE (Image within Image), I have also taken photographs of urban spaces so that my own projected shadow or reflected image as a "photographer´s mistake" always is visible. By later painting (or printing) on and around large versions of these photographs, I am pondering, whether the photographed or the painted component is more true or false, and whether the spaces in question are more or less ephemeral or permanent than the persons shown.
