HAMLET IN HARAKKA ISLAND

I Read a Book to a Skull
2016
-A Performative Installation

A long, long time ago, drifting through Alphabet City in New York, I came across a book. It was this one: Hamlet.

The annotations made by an unknown reader reveal that after the inscription of 03.04.81, the ghostly figure, two days later, marched to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and visited the Book-Friends bookstore.

The shards of glass that have washed onto the shores of Harakka Island have been rounded by the Fire of Hell and become the crown jewels of the skull, the symbol of death. The bone of the skull has become as colourful and variegated as the centuries of interpretations of Hamlet. In the pendulum movement of madness and reason, some readings shine bright while others remain opaque.

At random intervals, I will read Hamlet to the skull in the Telegraph gallery. The seating-space is free: sit down and drift!
