Bio

"In the prints of Jaana Paulus, soulful landscapes intersect the external reality in the same way as they did in our woodcut art at the time of Hugo Simberg. Human memories, the poignancy of life and growing, suffering caused by fellow humans for example in wars are recurring themes in the work of Paulus, but also the experience of the sacred or even religious faith, or nature's in finite beauty or splendor. Her works reveal life's vulnerability, but at the same time emphasize the transmission of power from nature to human being, if only one is willing to receive it. Seeing death as a partner may reflect the separateness of wishes from reality, and human yearning to a unity which is no longer possible to achieve."
