Artist’s Statement
The kaleidoscopic Sea Lapland and western archipelago are sources of my inspiration; the best are the rapid and forceful seasonal changes. Especially the falling of the first snow in the autumn and the breaking up of ice in the spring develop into motifs of my pictures. These are the seasons when I spend a lot of time in my cottage in Simo, on an island at the bottom of the nothern part of the Gulf Bothnia. I like to listen to the wind and watch how the snow moves. The rapid wintery light, colour world, and the nature’s rhythm never cease to enchant me.
My pictures are allusions to nature. I watch nature, take mental pictures, not photographs, and transform these into a rhythmic colour world in my works.
I don’t reach for the beautiful; beauty lies in storm, wind and rain, in the foaming of water, or on the snow after a blizzard. The reeds and rushes submit, flatten out on the ice – nature showing her power.
I use a mixture of various painting techniques. My paintings are often even violent, but at the same time sensitive. I also want to convey a strong sense of material.
