Artist’s Statement

Trained as an artist in my home country Finland and later in Italy, I use the same method studied by the masters of the 19th century. The roots of this classical painting and drawing method are in the Renaissance and academic tradition. I have studied the method in the Florence Academy of Art, Italy which is one of the very few studios in Europe still maintaining the Academic tradition. The main goal in this classical method is to express the effect of light on the object. While painting the live model I focus on exploring the light, shadows and halftones. Observing the natural light is interesting and at its best a meditative process which gives me a strong sense of the present moment.

In my paintings I use traditional techniques like gilding combined with tempera/oil painting. I think the best art is born from a balanced union of craftsmanship and creativity. Japanese Bather is part of series called “Bathers”. They are figures bathing in light. The light gives them their second birth.
