Artist’s Statement

I have made many kinds of art. I have made installations, environmental art and performance art but to me, an oil painting is the dearest. I usually make quite small paintings from my own life experience. Common themes in my work have been womanhood, the life cycle of human beings and my environment. The majority of my paintings are figurative but also I have painted in an abstract style. A popular style of painting, both in Finland and abroad is the two-piece painting. In such a work, one part of the painting depicts a realist representation of, for example, a ‘city landscape’ and the other part is its abstract interpretation. I believe that this style of painting crystallizes the aims of my artwork; to analyze the world through painting is to see it realistically but to always allow space for play and imagination.
