Artist’s Statement

Majbritt’s art is characterized by a powerful charge of environmental experience. In her works, she also addresses environmental changes. The artist treasure chest and findings have source in her childhood and adolescence period in Nikkilä hospital.

Majbritt paints in saturated colours with connection to surrounding landscape. Her abstract paintings are observations that reflect the history of thought. Often the paintings are site-specific and reflect the status of knowledge and presence. In her works, the artist creates structural solutions as the natural continuum of the landscape.

Majbritt produce her works in subject matter. She uses her surroundings, plant colours, boats from archipelago, old banners or constructs artworks of the village area in the historical perspective, transforming it to a virtual form.

Majbritt chooses materials from everyday life, but those, which support thinking and hand co-operation. The interaction between the self and place is very important for the artist.

Bio

Majbritt (Maikku) Huovila (b. 1966) is painter and community artist from Sipoo, Finland. She graduated as a professional painter from Vapaa Taidekoulu in 2005. From 2010 to 2012 she completed specialization in site-specific and public art in Turku Art Academy.

Huovila’s works include paintings, art and community projects in which the most important is the dialogue. In addition, Huovila has served as a teacher of fine arts in schools, as well as coordinated various community art projects.
