Artist’s Statement

Joonas Vähäsöyrinki paints, draws, engraves and designs. His works often combine several techniques of visual art. They are based on solid drawing enhanced by painting. Some of the works are three-dimensional. The artist finds his motifs in nature, in the built environment and in people. For Vähäsöyrinki, light is an element for visual representation. He is inspired by light, shadow, rhythm, colour and atmosphere. In painting human beings, the artist is intrigued by the challenge of portraying likeness as well as feelings and thoughts. He has painted many formal portraits. Vähäsöyrinki also paints vignettes about the everyday life of families and children.
