Artist’s Statement

I am a Helsinki-based visual artist. In my art an expressive mass-based approach to painting alternates with the rhythm of lines and dots. I am in search of a style of expression that penetrates the levels of time and touches the primitive. I depict a perspective that reaches both the surface and all of the layers underneath at the same time. My works are paintings on canvas and paper giants that rise to ceiling height.

What interests me about paintings on canvas is the weave that combines the power of the material, the delicacy of translucence and the rhythm of lines and dots. I mainly use oil and acrylic paints, but occasionally I also add ink and watercolor to my paintings. I may also add sculpture-like elements to my paintings. Sometimes intense layers of oil paint serve the purpose and other times I may, for example, create my paintings on a relief-like foundation that I have made from Japanese paper glued to the canvas.

I paint my giants on thin paper, for example Japanese paper or law book pages. The over 3-meter tall figures are created from several thin layers of acrylic paint, almost making the thin paper merge into the paint. Sometimes I work with acrylic paint and glue so that no paper is needed to paint the figures. In this case the giants are, entirely or at least in part, made from nothing but paint. My giants are characterized by elongated primitive shapes and a certain animal-like quality.

Bio

Paula Puoskari is a Helsinki-based visual artist working with paintings and installations. Puoskari´s exhibitions have examined, for example, civil disobedience, the collapse of a welfare state and ecological themes. Her way to deal with different themes is to provide a point of reference - yet in a way that ultimately aims to make the viewer consider their own role as an actor in sociopolitical phenomena. After graduating from the Free Art School in 2008, Puoskari has had annual solo exhibitions and taken part in several group exhibitions in Finland and abroad. She is a member of the Finnish Painters´ Union and the Helsinki Artists´ Association. www.paulapuoskari.com
