Artist’s Statement

Eliisa Sorvali née Suominen (1977) lives and works in Helsinki, Finland.

She graduated from the painting department of Academy of Fine Arts in Helsinki in 2006. (MA) She spent 2004 studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest and finalized her Art teachers studies in Aalto University Department of Art and Education in 2014.(MA)

She has participated in numerous exhibitions throughout Finland. Eliisa Sorvali works mainly with mixed media and likes to combine in her works something old and new. (sculpture, painting, drawing, photography and video/animations.)

Eliisa has seen all the sights in the world through the postcards she has collected over the past ten years. They serve as both a foundation and source of inspiration in her work. She is particularly interested in the visual and social meaning of postcards. She uses various collage techniques to examine and challenge stereotypes and learned ideals.

Her sculptural collages, called “Souvenirs,” deal with individual and collective memories, exoticism and recognition by analyzing present-day choices related to topics like climate change, although always with a sense of humor and in the spirit of kitsch.

Last five years she has been working as community artists in many different schools and kindergartens in Finland. She also likes to organize workshops and happenings. She loves to do art, work as a community artist and teach it forward.
