Artist’s Statement

My works are mostly painted with acrylic on canvas or boards.
I have got new ideas and perspectives on my paintings, e.g. while traveling and working at artist residencies such as Grassina, Salzburg, Tartu and Budapest.

My processes often begin during my travels or residencies and continue when I come home in Finland. Here the sources of inspiration and wonder can be found in the terrains of my outdoor runs and on the shores of rivers and lakes. The old, easily accessible forests are close to my heart, the most beloved is located near our former second home, next to a small Italian mountain village. There the mountains, the rivers, the forests, the sea and also the endless world of art in the vicinity of our home have left an eternal mark on me.

That imprint, the diversity of nature, the beauty, the ruggedness, the sensitivity and also its vulnerability comes into my paintings through my subconscious. In abstract works, they appear as different feelings instead of images. I hope that through my works, people will be able to connect with our inner humanity and nature so that we can have a better future as individuals through both our feelings and our actions. I think man and nature are one, we breathe and live through it and so does nature through us, so it is clear to me that we are part of the cycle of nature and nature conservation is a condition of our lives.

My mind calms down when I'm walking around in nature and listening to music, which also are an essential part of my painting process, they give movement, rhythm and strength to my paintings. These two things together are the foundation of my creativity.

Bio

“Anu Eskelin's painting is strongly influenced by nature. The light, the colours and the shapes she absorbs in nature are expressed in the painting process. For her, however, it is not about the depiction of what she sees, but about the feelings that are triggered in her by nature. When she paints, she forgets herself. The canvas tells her what to do. It is memories, remembered feelings inscribed in her body that Anu Eskelin puts on the canvas. In this way she connects the outer landscape with her inner one. Painting for her means being alive, being in this intense exchange. “

In Anu Eskelin's works, the imprint of painting is like a recording of free movement. The different emphases, shades and layered details of the brush create an excellent image surface.” E.Kattelus, Helsinki
