Artist’s Statement

I'm a maritime painter, and I paint the nature of the sea. In my paintings, the sea represents life, and the ship represents man.
The technique I use is called layering, and I practice it on canvas with oil paint. I've had over 70 exhibitions with a marine theme, both in Finland and abroad.
When I was nine, I decided I would be a maritime painter, because the sea was the most beautiful thing I knew. In that moment, sitting in the cockpit in an autumn storm in heeling wooden sailboat (A L-28 Elise) steered by my father, I became enamoured by the raging sea next to me.
When I was ten years old, I began playing the piano, and went on to pursue it as a musician for 30 years.
In 2004, I sailed the Atlantic for a month, with my husband. To see and experience the waves of an ocean was so transformative I decided to trade the keyboard for paint brushes, and the music for colors.
I paint from memory - things that I have experienced or reflected upon during my sailing trips. I have now traveled over 50,000 nautical miles. The sea is my element.
