Artist’s Statement

My graphic art moves along the edges, being a small-scale, halting, silent speech in the margin, where composition, colors and reflections on the creation of space are the core.

My work rhythm is a slow process, where the prints take shape from experiences in the world, dealing with being human.

Art history, architecture and nature are present in a reduced way, as references. The past and the present become parallel.

Cardboard graphics is my method.
The collage-like embossing process is by rolling translucent layers, with the addition of drypoint, sometimes carborundum, pvc relief printing. During the Corona period, I also started using gouache painting on top of what was already printed.

My way of working, serial work, variation mostly produces unique prints.

Bio

Mari Aspola, born 1947, is a printmaker and an art teacher. Alongside of the teaching work she has actively kept alive her own artistic work, concentrating later  in printmaking. For decades now she has actively taken part in group  and joint exhibitions, and also had her own solo exhibitions. She lives and works in Rauma and in Helsinki, and is a member of the Finnish Printmakers Association. From the year 2004 onwards the artist has concentrated in a more ecological method of printmaking, board graphics, using cardboard as a plate. This enables her to create collage prints  of several layers and concentrate on colour. The artwork has got the quality of small, silent movements. She makes series of prints, resulting more often than not, in unique pieces of art, variations of a theme.

Mari Aspola has actively participated in joint- and group exhibitions for decades, held solo exhibitions. Lives and works in Rauma and also in Helsinki.
